In a District Energy system, a central plant produces hot water, steam or chilled water and delivers it to a group of buildings or facilities via an underground piping network. District Energy can integrate Renewable Energy and Combined Heat and Power.
District Energy is simple, safe, reliable, environmentally-responsible and not capital intensive for the users.
Global Leadership in District Energy
It is during the post Second World War massive reconstruction period that Dalkia started to install and manage its first district heating and cooling network - some 60 years ago. Today with 890 urban district energy systems, Dalkia is the largest operator worldwide with 2010 revenues of $3.7 billion or 33% of total annual revenues.
Everyday, Dalkia provides its customers with unequalled, reliable and efficient end-to-end solutions combining heating and cooling systems, electricity generation when feasible and associated management services.
Dalkia offers complete one-stop solutions for various energy schemes for homogenous or mixed user development. Dalkia designs, finances, builds, owns, operates and maintains the district energy scheme infrastructure, or any combination. We also integrate the most advanced technologies, cost efficient energy sources and world-class best operating procedures.
To our customers, we bring unique skills and over 70-year experience to the complete process - from fuel procurement, transformation of the fuel to useful energy and distribution of that energy to end-user installations, to metering and billing - and after the meter energy optimization.
Reliable Utilities in Major Urban North American Cities
In North America, Dalkia owns and manages the largest portfolio of district energy networks in major Canadian and American cities with 16 urban district energy networks supplied by over 25 central utility plants. The capacity of plants operated by Dalkia exceeds 236,400 tons of chilled water, 14 million lb/hr steam and 345 MW of electricity from CHP plants to service the requirements of over 1,360 customers over 30 million sq ft of customer space. Dalkia also manages additional district energy networks owned by third parties.
In Canada, Dalkia is the operator and 50% shareholder, in partnership with Gaz Metro, of the district energy system in Montreal. This scheme is one of the largest in Canada.
